Holding onto reality.
Life has a way of throwing unexpected curveballs at you. It is filled with laughter, joy, love, friendship, and tender loving affection. However, it is also filled with tears, suffering, confusion, heartache, and loss.
What we want is the same: to love and be loved. And we are wired to seek it in people and in the relationships around us. We open up our hearts, make ourselves vulnerable, and freely love in the hopes that others return that love. But sometimes we are met with hurt, betrayal, and lies. And when that happens, we withdraw. We isolate, shut people out, and close off our hearts because we’re afraid of getting hurt again.
After pain, it is difficult to trust other people. We are wired to avoid pain and run from any signs of discomfort. We may constantly be on guard and almost look for potential signs that we will get hurt. But it is important to trust reality for what it is. When we don’t trust our own judgment and when the present circumstances are colored by past hurt, it is important to remind ourselves that the past is not present.
