Mexico
A heart for others.
With the rise and advancement of social media, society as a whole is becoming more and more self-absorbed. Social media feeds into our insecurities of not being good enough and often this insecurity stems from pride and self-absorption. We become insecure precisely because we focus too much on ourselves.
Magazines and self-help books try to combat this insecurity by telling us to focus on our strengths and our competencies. But this is a prime example of mis-diagnosing the situation. A problem well-defined is already half the solution. It’s not that we don’t love ourselves enough, it’s that we love ourselves too much.
In my experience, the most effective and efficient way to uproot this insecurity is to help and serve others. The less I focus on myself, the less insecure I feel. When I focus my attention on loving other people, my feelings of incompetence naturally melt away and I am able to experience a true joy of loving others.
The mission field is the perfect place to practice this servitude. There is no greater joy than dying to your own selfishness and pride and serving other people for the glory of God. This experience in Mexico was a blessing for me and I hope to go on more missions in the future.
